Die Nikon Z6 stellt die erste und bislang einzige Vollformat DSLM dar, die in der Lage ist, ProRes RAW im Verbund mit dem Atomos Ninja V aufzuzeichnen. Wir wollten wissen, wie sich die Aufnahme- und die Postproduktionspraxis mit ProRes Raw darstellt und ob sich überzeugende Hauttöne aus dem ProRes Raw Material herausholen lassen. Als Vergleich haben wir auch in Nikon-N-Log aufgenommen - mit Teils überraschenden Ergebnissen ?

Hi,

In my short experience with Prores Raw, monitoring the signal is really the most problematic part. Wafeform cannot be trusted. First of all, nobody talks that ISO in recording linear raw is completely different to ISO in log. In exposure tests I established that in fact you have to shoot at the base ISO 100 and rate the camera at around ISO 640 for correct exposure (18% grey). However, waveform in "native", pq, hlg modes show the picture too dark compared to how it really is. So really a solution is needed so that we could monitor on Ninja V correctly... However, in post things are quite nice if you use Assimilate Scratch - I easily converted files to Arri log c exporting to prores 4444. After that Arri log c to rec 709 LUT works almost perfectly, with little additional tweak needed to get a very "Alexa like" picture.

Das das RAW Material einfach zu graden sei haben ja auch schon andere berichtet. Trotzdem wäre es natürlich schön wenn Nikon in absehbarer Zeit auch eine Conversion LUT für RAW rausbringt. Ich persönlich warte mit dem RAW Workflow noch solange bis Adobe es auch unterstützt. Einfach weil mir das lieber ist als dafür extra eine andere Software kaufen zu müssen, bzw. nur auf dem Mac editieren zu können. Assimilate ist mir dafür einfach zu teuer.

Ich fand ja das Filmmaker-Kit wirkt auf den Abbildungen auch eher unhandlich. Einfach weil das Display und dessen Schwerpunkt dann so weit von der Kamera entfernt ist, wenn man das Gelenk auf den Top-Handle montiert. Und seitlich montiert ist die Balance auch subotimpal. Für niedrige Bildwinkel ist ein Top-Handle aber eventuell praktisch. Ich habe das eher zu einer Einheit geriggt und greife die Kamera dann direkt am Body. Das funktioniert für mich am besten und einfachsten, zumal ich dann auch gleichzeitig mit der Hand die Kamera bedienen kann ohne umgreifen zu müssen.

thx für your comment and for sharing the Scratch tip. Sounds interesting. Looking forward to testing that with more time at hand.

I agree that monitoring at the moment is kind of a gamble. Hopefully we will see more consistent monitoring options with the Ninja V for ProRes Raw in future updates ...
