Apple hat eine Handvoll Tech-Journalisten ins Hauptquartier geladen, um etwas für das Unternehmen eher Ungewöhnliches zu tun: Über kommende Produkte zu sprechen. Hierbei ging es u.a. um die Entwicklung eines „completely rethought” Mac Pro. Auch von neuen Pro Displays war die Rede. Die schlechte Nachricht für Mac Pro User ist, dass der neue Mac Pro nicht mehr in 2017 erscheinen wird (und auch 2018 nicht explizit bestätigt wurde, sondern nur, dass es nicht 2017 werden wird).
Die gute Nachricht ist, dass Apple der Pro User Markt wichtig genug zu sein scheint, um von seiner bisherigen Geheimniskrämerei Abstand zu nehmen und klar zu sagen, dass an einem komplett neuen Mac Pro Design gearbeitet wird und dass dieses zentrale Schwächen der aktuellen Mac Pros adressieren wird.
Das bedeutet vor allem, dass die neuen Mac Pros modular aufgebaut sein sollen und für einen „langen Zeitraum“ mit Updates und Upgrades versorgt werden sollen. Damit dürfte Apple die „thermische Sackgasse“, in die man sich mit den aktuellen Mac Pros navigiert hat, mit einem radikalen Bruch verlassen. Die Möglichkeit u.a. große GPUs in den Mac Pros zu nutzen, sowie insgesamt besser Upgradefähigkeit dürften zentrale Punkte beim Redesign werden.

"We’re not going to get into exactly what stage we’re in, just that we told the team to take the time to do something really great. To do something that can be supported for a long time with customers with updates and upgrades throughout the years. We’ll take the time it takes to do that. The current Mac Pro, as we’ve said a few times, was constrained thermally and it restricted our ability to upgrade it. And for that, we’re sorry to disappoint customers who wanted that, and we’ve asked the team to go and re-architect and design something great for the future that those Mac Pro customers who want more expandability, more upgradability in the future. It’ll meet more of those needs."
