Welcome to the first part of my new series on color management. Although it’s exciting to launch a new series, there’s not that much to get excited by when it comes to color management. It’s a topic that I feel I need to cover, rather than something I want to cover. Honestly, color management is a royal pain in the rear. But at the same time, we’re at a point where color management can’t be ignored completely. Hence the title of the introduction: The honeymoon is over.

Color Management has always been a topic that has made me slightly uneasy. When software first started including color management features, my main concern was that the colors might change – something I considered to be a very bad thing. Later on, as I started working with RED and Arri footage in After Effects, I became concerned that I wasn’t seeing the full range of detail and quality that I knew was in the files. In 2014, I posted a tutorial on how to round-trip Arri LogC footage in After Effects, and more recently I’ve shared a video on how to work with R3D files in After Effects, with the maximum possible detail.

Man musste nur verzichten, sei es aufgrund technischer Limitierungen oder einfach aus Pragmatismus, da sonst an anderer Stelle unangenehmere Abstriche hätten gemacht werden müssen.

Sollte CM nicht gerade eben grenzwertig einfach geworden sein? Es kommt mir so vor als schwappten gerade hunderte CM-Tutorials über uns herein, die sagen, hey Leute, es könnt‘ alles so einfach sein - aber dann hätt‘ ich nichts auf‘s Brot. Deswegen bleibt bei mir, ich verspreche, es ist keine Raketentechnik …

Stellt sich raus, das ist es dann auch nicht, die banale Steuererklärung ist ungleich komplexer und, äh, unerklärlicher.

Wenn die Software es fehlerfrei unterstützt und die relevanten Metadaten der Medien nicht schlichtweg falsch sind, dann ist einfaches CM im Foto- und Videobereich inzwischen nahezu trivial.

Man muss sein OS und Display nur 1x richtig einrichten.

Komplizierter wird die Sache erst, wenn aus einem großen Farbraum in einen kleinen Abgebildet werden soll und/oder ggf. auch noch andere Farbmodelle wie YCMK verwendet werden, denn hierfür gibt es keine eindeutige Zuordnung.

Allerdings sollte man Mathe mögen, um Gründe und Vorgehensweisen wirklich zu verstehen. Daher würde ich hierfür nicht auf ein Video warten, in dem jemand irgendetwas erzählt, das er woanders aufgeschnappt hat.
