Avid does NOT re-encode when you do a "fast" import, it just copies the file to the Avid MediaFiles folder (;or
OMF
folder) in its own format. So basicly it's drive speed that is the limiting factor.
If you want faster, i can create something that will create Avid files inside an Avid Mediafiles folder so you just have to open the media tool to get them into your bin. You also can have a project, bin name, reelname and timecode attached to the clip.
But that only works for specific resolutions/codecs.
I take it you're in
NTSC
, what codecs do you use?
And, what platform are you on?
