1 How would you describe the aesthetics of your film?
---|
Lots of wide-angle close ups, strong colors, handheld camera -- moving but not shaky. High tempo.
2 Why did you choose to shoot on dv?
---|
Financial reasons.
If small camera size and low tape cost are important factors for your story -- then DV is perfect.
If good picture quality is important -- chose something else, like film.
3 What was special about shooting in dv (e.g.compared to 35mm, was it your first time with dv or are you used to it)?
---|
It was my first DV-movie. Our goal was to really use the advantages of DV, like the small camera size. So, for example
we tried to play a lot, make pictures that we wouldn't have done with a big 35mm-camera and come closer to the actors.
Follow them instead of them being restricted by exact and rehersed camera movements. If you use a lot of steady wide
shots, DV looks like shit on cinema.
4 Which camera and which editing software did you use?
---|
Two Sony PD100's and Avid.
5 What was your shoot-edit ratio?
---|
50:1
6 Would you have preferred to shoot in another format? If so which?
---|
With our budget no. But if we woud have had unlimited budget I would have prefered to use a small 16 or 35mm camera like
Aaton for the same aesthetics but better picture quality and more tolerant exposure latitude.
7 Does using dv mean that you are considering other means of distribution opposing the established? If so which?
---|
Not more than if shot in any other format.
8 One good word about dv (or two):
---|
Small cameras, built in LCD monitor, low cost tape. (I liked working with DV)
9 One bad word about dv (or two):
---|
Bad picture quality (compared to film) like exposure latidude, resolution and unwanted "compression effects". The
picture compression that DV uses can give strange side effects when the pictures is beeing manipulated - strong
colorgrading or even the print out to film.
