You can convert the .mts-files created by your camera with every semi-professional editing software, e.g. Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas, Edius Neo, etc...
Adobe Premiere, for example, supports the import of .mts-files (such as those created by the SD 707, which should actually be the same) and you can edit them like any other type of files. After editing there's an option to export your project to any other format, for example h.264. If you wish to use it for web-viewing on your homepage, you may want to use h.264 for best results.
I hope this helped...
Regards
EDIT: I've just read that you're looking for a way without "hohe kosten - high costs"..... Well all these editing programs that I've listed above are not freeware, but they're worth paying. I'm sure there will be freeware for converting your files into another format but don't expect too much from freeware. If it's only a temporary concern you may also want to use the trial version of Adobe Premiere... You can convert your files within the testing phase until it expires..
We need his recordings in original format. I can work on these myself on my PC , I have no problems what so ever.
Our partner wants to use the material, but "only" has a Mac OS 10.4 (his editing programme is imovie HD version 6)
I could convert the format for him, but the material needs to go online quite quickly, and I honestly have´nt the time to do so.
He needs to convert .MTS to .MOV using the OS that he has.
he has tried for example the following software, but to no avail:
(although it´s stated to run on a mac OS 10.4)
he tried the free version, before being willing to buy the full version.
BTW when he plugs the Camcorder into the mac, he is able to access the .MTS files, but not play them or (at the moment) able to convert them into .MOV files.

Give Media Converter a try: It runs on 10.4.11, is free Open Source software and can convert (or better: re-wrap) MTS files to MOV. To be sure, I just tested an AVCHD file shot with a Panasonic SD99 and had no problem whatsoever with importing it into Media Converter, re-wrapping it quickly as h.264 QuickTime and finally importing it into iMovie (iMovie 9 only tested as I don't have iMovie 6 installed). Works like a charm and without any quality loss.
