"Louis B Mayer, who was running MGM at the time, was concerned about the rise of trade unions within the movie industry which he feared would limit his ability to control the artists and craftspeople at his studio and to set their wages.
Not wanting to be seen as anti-union, rather than forbid MGM workers from forming or joining unions, he suggested to some fellow studio heads and leading lights of the movie business that they should form an institution which would admit movie practitioners and give them a similar sense of cohesion and belonging - but which institution crucially he and his fellow moguls could control."
Und direkt "from the man himself":
"I found that the best way to handle [moviemakers] was to hang medals all over them. If I got them cups and awards, they’d kill themselves to produce what I wanted. That’s why the Academy Award was created."
