Das sibirische Gefangenenlager UF-91/9 ist ein Lager für straffällig gewordene Frauen. „Hierher zu kommen, ist eine Tragödie, überall nur Depression“, sagt eine von ihnen. Aber sie sagt auch: „Ich denke, eine Frau sollte immer schön sein. Nicht nur jenseits des Zauns. Auch wenn sie hier drinnen ist, sollte sie ihre Schönheit zeigen. Sie sollte sie nicht in diesen Mauern verbergen.“ Tatsächlich kommt die Schönheit der Frauen im Lager UF-91/9 zur Geltung: bei einer Modenschau, die im Zentrum des Films von Maria Yatskova steht. Einmal im Jahr führen Strafgefangene ihren Mithäftlingen eigene Kreationen und Maßanfertigungen vor; in der Regel ist es für sie der erste Auftritt auf einem Laufsteg. [aus dem Berlinale-Programm]
INTERVIEW How would you describe the aesthetics of your film?
The film mostly takes place in a prison camp in Siberia and in the surrounding villages and suburbs so essentially the surroundings are really stark, grey and harsh. Dusty browns and faded greens. Not much movement in the shots. During the beauty pageant portion there is an explosion of color on top of this background. And in general, as the film progresses from dealing with imprisonment to freedom there are more colors and action in the shots. In one word, moody.
Why did you choose to shoot on a digital format (was it solely for financial reasons, or did aesthetics play a role)?
Truthfully, I wanted Miss Gulag to look as much like film as possible.
Which format exactly did you choose (MiniDV, DVCAM, HDV, HD...), and why?
Our DP said that with proper lighting he could make HDV look film-like so that's what we went with.
What was special about shooting digital (e.g. compared to 35mm, was it your first time with dv or are you used to it ..)?
It was my first film, so I can't compare to 35mm (yet!)
What was your shoot-edit ratio?
About 30 hours of footage for an 80 minute film.
