Einerseits sei er persönlich noch nie mit Antisemitismus konfrontiert gewesen, andererseits gehöre die Rede davon zum israelischen Alltag wie ein stetes Hintergrundgeräusch, an das man sich gewöhnt, sagt Regisseur Yoav Shamir. Defamation ist seine sehr persönliche Suche nach der Rolle, die Antisemitismus heute spielt. Er begleitet unter anderem Abe Foxman, einen Überlebenden des Holocaust und Vorsitzenden der amerikanischen Anti Defamation League (ADL), dessen Leben ganz im Zeichen des Mahnens vor den immer noch virulenten Gefahren des Antisemitismus steht, sowie israelische Jugendliche auf Polenreise, die davon überzeugt sind, dass man sie überall auf der Welt hasst. Die Rolle des Antisemitismus als identitätsstiftendes Moment gerät so in den Mittelpunkt. Kritiker der ADL stellen die Frage nach der politischen Dimension dieser Prämisse für die Rolle und das Ansehen Israels. Yoav Shamir sieht sich aber nicht als Schlachter einer heiligen Kuh. Das Nachfragen und die Option, neu über dieses hochemotionale Thema nachzudenken, sind ihm wichtiger als Feindbilder zu malen. Als junger Israeli tut er das wie ein Sohn, der die Überzeugungen der Elterngeneration unbequem hinterfragt. Gute Eltern lassen sich auf eine Diskussion ein. [aus dem Forumprogramm]

It seems your focus changed during the research process for the film; did the final result end up the way you then imagined it would? Or were there any determining surprises during the shooting / editing?
The subject of the film – anti-Semitism – is a subject which so many people study, and is discussed so much, that I felt I needed to come up with an original idea to justify making such a film. It was very important for me to surprise myself as I went along and to keep the spirit of the search, so you can call the whole film research material. Style wise the film is not different then what I thought it would be and content wise, I said from the very beginning that this film is a search, so in order for such a search to be real, being surprised is part of the film making.

Your film Flipping out (2007) was shot in a handheld "guerilla style" -- what about this film, did you work in a similar way? What were the challenges in this production?
In this film like most films I am making I like to shoot my self, it gives a sence of freedom and I get exactly what I want, the biggest benefit is the ability to create intimacy with the people I meet. The big challenge in this film is to find a way that visually it will not be boring because most of it could have been very easily talking heads in closed offices, I wanted to have something more then just that, I wanted to keep an energy that will reflect the journey I am going through; I hope I succeeded.

Was this film also shot on HDV?
Part of it was shot on the sony Z1 (HDV), and as soon as the EX1 came out I switched to it and fell in love with this camera, which produces amazing result in compare to its size and price.
