How would you describe the aesthetics of your film? 
IT EMBODIES MODERN CINEMA BY USING EXPERIMENTAL DIGITAL VIDEO TO TELL A
CLASSIC STORY. I DEVELOPED A SCI-FI LOOK WITH MY TEAM OF COLLABORATORS THAT
HAS NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE. WE CALL THE MOVIE A DOCU-FANTASY BECAUSE EACH
SCENE FEELS SO REAL LIKE A DOCUMENTARY BUT LOOKS LIKE THIS FANTASTIC VISUAL
KALEIDOSCOPE OF COLORS.
  
Why did you choose to shoot on dv? 
I CHOSE VIDEO BECAUSE MOST OF MY MENTORS AND TEACHERS LIKE STAN BRAKHAGE,
PHIL SOLOMON AND LEE BRIDGERS TAUGHT ME THE BEAUTY OF  FILM  BUT ALSO
TAUGHT ME THAT IT WAS ALREADY DEAD. TO ME, VIDEO IS AN ENTIRELY NEW MEDIUM
OF EXPLORATION WITHIN THE WORLD OF MODERN NARRATIVE CINEMA AND "QUATTRO
NOZA" IS PART OF A SMALL HANDFUL OF GREAT FILMS THAT HAVE MANAGED TO CRACK
THE SURFACE OF ITS POTENTIAL..."JULIAN DONKEY BOY", "CELEBRATION", "28 DAYS
LATER", AND A FEW OTHERS.
I HOPE THAT MY FUTURE INVESTORS WILL GIVE MY PRODUCER FREDRIC KING AND I THE
FREEDOM TO EXPLORE VIDEO EVEN FURTHER ON A LARGER SCALE.
  
What was special about shooting in dv (e.g.compared to 35mm, was it your first time with dv or are you used to it)? 
THE PROCESS OF DISCOVERY IS THE GREAT THING ABOUT VIDEO. THE FACT THAT YOU
NEVER HAVE TO SHUT THE CAMERA OFF. THE FACT THAT ACTORS FEEL MORE
COMFORTABLE WITH SMALLER CAMERAS ON THEM, LESS LIGHTING, ETC ALL LEND TO
THE POSSIBILITIES OF GREATER PERFORMANCE. EVERYONE IS USUALLY FOOLED AND
LED TO BELIEVE YOU ARE SHOOTING HOME VIDEOS SO PUBLIC LOCATIONS ARE EASIER
TO STEAL. OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPERIMENT ARE ENDLESS.
  
Which camera and which editing software did you use? Which format exactly
did you choose (MiniDV, DVCAM..) 
WE USED CANON XL-1 AND SONY PD-100A CAMERAS WITH MINI-DV TAPES FROM CIRCUIT
CITY AND WE WON THE CINEMATOGRAPHY AWARD AT SUNDANCE 2003 PUTTING ALL THE
35MM PICTURES TO SHAME. REMEMBER IT TOOK ME 4 YEARS TO GET IT TO LOOK LIKE
IT DOES WHICH WAS NOT EASY AND INVOLVES LOTS OF RE-PHOTOGRAPHY, EDITING
TRICKS, AND ON-LINE COLORING BUT STILL IT WAS A FEAT THAT I AM VERY PROUD
OF. 
I EDITED ON VARIOUS AVID SYSTEMS WHILE MY PARTNER JIM HELTO CUT ON FINAL CUT
PRO. WE DID OUR ONLINE ON AN AVID SYMPHONY.
  
What was your shoot-edit ratio? 
I HAVE AN INSANE AMOUNT OF FOOTAGE. PROBABLY OVER 300 HOURS OF TAPE. IF
YOU'RE NOT A HARDCORE EDITOR I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS TECHNIQUE BUT I LIVED
AND DIED FOR THIS MOVIE FOR FIVE YEARS NOW AND ITS GOING TO THE BIG SCREEN
THIS SUMMER SO FUCK IT...AFTER THE BERLIN FILM FESTIVAL I'M DOING ONE LAST
RESHOOT RIGHT WHEN I GET BACK TO LOS ANGELES AT THE END OF FEBUARY. THAT'S
THE BEAUTY OF VIDEO...I OWN THE CAMERA BABY!!!
  
Would you have preferred to shoot in another format? If so which? 
NOT ON THIS FILM. I DESIGNED THE ENTIRE AESTHETIC AROUND VIDEO.
  
Does using dv mean that you are considering other means of distribution
opposing the established? If so which? 
NO...I WANT A WIDE AUDIENCE TO SEE THIS FILM AND I TOOK WHAT I COULD GET AS
FAR AS DISTRIBUTION GOES. SOBINI FILMS PICKED "QUATTRO NOZA" UP FOR
THEATRICAL AND PUT UP FINISHING FUNDS WHICH WE ARE USING NOW TO COMPLETE
EDITING AND MUSIC.
REMEMBER, VIDEO IS STILL HIGHLY NEW AND EXPERIMENTAL TO HOLLYWOOD CATS. IT'S
AN EVEN TOUGHER SELL THAN INDEPENDENT MOVIES SHOT ON 35MM, SO I GUESS YOU
COULD SAY IT'S VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET DISTRIBUTION UNLESS YOU'RE REALLY
FORTUNATE AND GOD IS ON YOUR SIDE. LUCKILY THE FORCE IS WITH ME...MY FIRST
FEATURE SHOT ON 16MM AND SHOWED AT SUNDANCE 1998 WAS NOT SO FORTUNATE AND
NEVER GOT DISTRIBUTED.
  
One good word about dv (or two): 
IT'S CHEAPER TO PRACTICE ON THAN FILM AND YOU DON'T WANT TO PLAN
EVERYTHING.  IMPROVISATION CAN LEAD TO NEW DISCOVERY.
  
One bad word about dv (or two): 
PRACTICING ON FILM MAKES YOU PLAN MORE IN ADVANCE SO YOU MUST VISUALIZE THE
PICTURES IN YOUR MIND BEFORE TURNING ON THE JUICE.
