Being Pavarotti ist ein sanfter Film über einen ganz normalen Jungen mit einer außergewöhnlichen Begabung. Der Filmemacherin, die das Leben des Elton Nkanunu ein Jahr lang beobachtet hat, stellten sich dabei eine ganze Reihe von Fragen: Was für ein Leben führt dieser Junge in einem schwarzen Township am Rande von Hermanus, dem internationalen Ferienort? Viele Südafrikaner besitzen ein besonderes Gesangstalent. Was aber geschieht mit diesem Potential in unserer neuen Demokratie? [aus dem Forum-Programm] QUESTIONNAIRE How would you describe the aesthetics of your film? The film uses different aesthetic styles - observational, set-up interviews, stylised footage, etc. The overall aesthetic is that of gentleness and simpatico. Why did you choose to shoot on dv? In terms of the available budget, there was no other option. What was special about shooting in dv (e.g. compared to 35mm, was it your first time with dv or are you used to it)? It was the first long form documentary which I have directed, so unfortunately I do not have any comparable experience. What was your shoot-edit ratio? We shot 65 x 40 min tapes for a final length of 52 minutes. Would you have preferred to shoot in another format? If so which? No. Does using dv mean that you are considering other means of distribution opposing the established? If so which? Not really. The film was commissioned by the South African Broadcasting Corporation, which is the establishment. One good word about dv (or two): a) It facilitates small crews, which helps a lot with creating intimacy with one's subject. b) Ease of handling.
