QUESTIONNAIRE
How would you describe the aesthetics of your film?
'Belonging' would probably fit into the genre of narrative documentary. The film hangs on the main spine of a particular story, which has a genesis, consequences, and a conclusion, with a couple of sub-themes at a slight tangent to the main thread. In some ways, I've shot it like an unfolding drama, but one that is unrehearsed or choreographed. This, of course, required endless shooting. As a first-time camera-person, I focussed less on the 'look' of the shot rather than on the spatial relationships of my subjects, and tried to frame shots in terms of the lived relationships between the subjects.
Why did you choose to shoot on dv?
We were telling a very personal, very intimate story and in practical terms DV was appropriate. It gave me the freedom to be a one-person crew, travelling easily and widely together with Kethi, and shooting at will. South African budgets are limited, and money was definitely an issue. If aesthtics played a role, this would probably be reflected in the fact that dv freed everyone on Project 10 to shoot the films themselves, encouraging individual styles and voices.
What was special about shooting in dv (e.g. compared to 35mm, was it your first time with dv or are you used to it)?
As a camera person this was my first time to shoot at all. As a director I've shot on Super 16mm and Betacam. For drama, I'd probably still choose film if the budget allowed. (Although HD is very appealing.) I would probably want to continue doing the camerawork on documentaries myself, and would use MiniDV.
What was your shoot-edit ratio?
The film's final duration is 53 minutes and we shot 125 x 41-minute tapes.
Would you have preferred to shoot in another format? If so which?
No, I was happy with this format for this particular film.
Does using dv mean that you are considering other means of distribution
opposing the established? If so which?
At the moment, Project 10 is using the usual means of distribution for all the films.
One good word about dv (or two):
This format is perfect if one wants to be able to shoot at a moment's notice. As a woman, I appreciate the lightweight camera, small tapes and ease of dv. I also appreciate low budget filmmaking in that one doesn't have money for expensive tricks, and one is encouraged to be resourceful.
One bad word about dv (or two):
When using MiniDV one can do everything oneself, and one does, which is not necessarily a good idea.
