QUESTIONNAIRE
1 How would you describe the aesthetics of your film?
As simplest as possible I can describe the aesthetics of my film as a
stylistic film verité. It is a comedy genre in its essence, and I had to improve it in style. The framing was fast; everything in handheld camera. I'm a fan of liberating cinema.
2 Why did you choose to shoot on dv?
This film is shoot on DIGI BETA. But if I can choose again, it'll be DV.
3 What was special about shooting in dv (e.g.compared to 35mm, was it your first time with dv or are you used to it)?
The main advantage comparing to 35mm was that I did not restrict myself
with expensive negative film, and it was a lot faster. Today technical
improvements erase frontiers between digital tape and celluloid. They become
very similar in quality of the final picture. So I can say that I do not
have any necessity to work on 16mm or 35mm. This way its more comfortable,
and more fun. You have as much material as you need. And in the end, if you
want, you can have a cheap picture facelift in the post production.
4 What was your shoot-edit ratio?
Shooting was 7 week long, and we did final picture and sound edit in about
15 weeks. We did a few things in a picture colorization, which took a week
more.
5 Would you have preferred to shoot in another format? If so which?
For my taste the best cheap format is DV. It is much better than DIGI
BETA. You have very small cameras in DV format, which I think is the main
advantage. Also I think it's grease and colourful, more film-look format than
DIGI BETA, which is,
in my opinion, more TV oriented. Great future is in front of DV.
6 Does using dv mean that you are considering other means of distribution
opposing the established? If so which?
Maybe some day. With DV you can put your movie on the hard disc and
distribute it through a world web, and get a million of viewers in the same
moment. That is the future of the cinema.
7 One good word about dv (or two):
It is a small, light and liberating format. It puts everybody in front of
filmmaking.
8 One bad word about dv (or two):
Sadly, but I don't like tapes of any kind. I'm waiting for a huge
capacity hard discs to put a picture and sound on it. That, I suppose, will
be the final punch to any other format.
