INTERVIEW How would you describe the aesthetics of your film?
We tried to tell a story that was honest and truthful. As Michael comes from a documentary background and Lori comes from a narrative background, the marriage of the two aesthetics truly made On the Outs an unique experience to film. We tried to make the viewing experience difficult to tell exactly what you are watching, whether it is a documentary or a feature.
Which digital format did you choose to shoot on, and why (was it solely for financial reasons, or did aesthetics play a role)?
We chose to shoot on the Panasonic SDX-900 for a number of reasons. As we did not have the budget to shoot on film, we wanted to use the best digital format that suited our needs. We wanted to make sure that we had the option to blow up On the Outs to a film print, and with the SDX-900 shooting in native 16:9, we have that option. Also, the mobility of this camera helped on our shoot, as we ended up shooting in some very dangerous neighborhoods and had to always be prepared to move quickly.
What was special about shooting on DV (e.g. compared to 35mm, was it your first time with dv or are you used to it ..)?
Michael has used dv on numerous occasions with his documentary work, however shooting an entire project on dv was new for Lori. As we have both shot films on film negative before, this experiecnce was special because we had a lot of flexibility in what we shot. As a lot of film was improvised on set, using dv allowed us to shoot as much as we wanted without worrying too much about budget.
What was your shoot-edit ratio?
About 25:1
Looking back: Would you have preferred to shoot in another format? If so which?
We think it is always enjoyable to shoot a movie on film, however this camera does an incredible job and we were truly pleased with the outcome. We learned a lot about shooting on video making this film and we definitely look forward to making another one with this camera.
One good word about dv (or two):
Captures low light well. Cheap.
One bad word about dv (or two):
Reds are hard to capture. Doesn't like slow pans.
