Im Chinesischen besitzt das Wort „Amphetamine“ noch eine weitere Bedeutung, nämlich: „Ist dies nicht sein Schicksal?“ Von ihm wird in diesem leidenschaftlichen Drama ein junger Fitnesstrainer namens Kafka eingeholt.
Kafka arbeitet nebenher als Kampfsportkünstler und Botenjunge. Nur mithilfe mehrerer Jobs kann er seine kranke Mutter finanziell unterstützen. Der Vater lebt nicht mehr. Er hat sich vor langer Zeit das Leben genommen. Kafka war damals noch ein Kind.
Eines Nachts – es ist dieselbe Nacht, in der er sich von seiner Freundin May getrennt hat – lernt Kafka den jungen Finanzmanager Daniel kennen. Daniel ist aus Australien nach Hongkong zurückgekommen, um hier im Herbst 2008 die Folgen der Finanzkrise in den Griff zu kriegen. Daniel umwirbt Kafka sehr heftig, und Kafka gibt diesen Avancen nach – weil er einsam ist und sich nach Liebe sehnt. [aus dem Berlinale-Programm]

How would you describe the aesthetics of your film?
Basically we've tried to create a lyrical presentation of a fateful love in a drugged world. The film is cold, serene, and highly conscious.

Why did you choose to shoot on a digital format (was it solely for financial reasons, or did aesthetics play a role)?
Aesthetics absolutely.

Which format exactly did you choose (MiniDV, DVCAM, HDV, HD...), and why?
HD, it has the highest quality in digital form.

What was special about shooting digital (e.g. compared to 35mm, was it your first time with dv or are you used to it ..)?
I shot my previous film, Permanent Residence in HDV, and prior to that, City without Baseball in super 16. The choice of format depends solely on genre of the film.

What was your shoot-edit ratio?
I don't really know... probably care about that less in digital filming.

Flexible.

One bad word about DV / HDV (or two):
Shallow.
