INTERVIEW How would you describe the aesthetics of your film?
I will describe it as the contemplation of immobility of migration.
Why did you choose to shoot on a digital format (was it solely for financial reasons, or did aesthetics play a role)?
Not only because of financial reasons, also for aesthetical purposes. My film is called “The infinite border” and is about Central Americans crossing México on their way to the US. The migration journey tends to be “infinite”, not only because it is about 4,000 kilometers long, also because the one that goes can’t return easily. So I wanted to construct the image “ad infinitum”, and for that reason I needed a format that gives me an apparent infinite depth of field. Also because I needed the immigrants to feel comfortable. If we had arrived with a cinema equipment (maybe two more people and much more boxes) we would have scared the immigrants, or maybe they would misunderstand that we only want to observe them.
Which format exactly did you choose (MiniDV, DVCAM, HDV, HD...), and why?
We shot in HDV because the high quality and the low cost in shooting and editing. Buy also we use Betacam SP, miniDV and analogue video. We finish in HDCAM.
What was special about shooting digital (e.g. compared to 35mm, was it your first time with dv or are you used to it ..)?
It’s my first time in HD. In my film school we always used film (16 and 35). I think the best thing with going digital is the freedom that it gives.
What was your shoot-edit ratio?
I shot 2520 min. The film is 90 min long. So the shooting ratio is 28:1 aprox.
One good word about DV / HDV (or two):
Freedom.
One bad word about DV / HDV (or two):
Because of the low cost, it's usual to shoot and then think. This is dangerous, because we are making a lot of visual garbage. We have to think and then shot, as we did when using film.
