INTERVIEW How would you describe the aesthetics of your film?
The film "Monday Morning Glory" is about a police reenactment of a terrorist
attack, and was shot with a documentary like approach, hand held and with no
artificial lighting.
Why did you choose to shoot on a digital format (was it solely for financial reasons, or did aesthetics play a role)?
To be honest, the only format we considered was digital, because we neither
had the budget to shoot on film, nor could we have pulled it off in such a tight schedule. while Writing the script I knew this would be a digital film, since I wanted it to have a "documentary" feel to it.
What was special about shooting digital (e.g. compared to 35mm, was it your first time with dv or are you used to it ..)?
It allowed us the flexibility to move around quickly, and to shoot in many public places and still not attract attention. It also allowed the whole shooting process to be more organic because we were less bogged down by equipment and could concentrate on the story and acting. (I have shot on DV and film so to me in the end, its just a difference in mediums, the story is still the most important thing).
Which format exactly did you choose (MiniDV, DVCAM, HDV, HD...), and why?
We shot Monday Morning Glory on MiniDV, on the Panasonic DVX102
What was your shoot-edit ratio?
We shot about 24 hours of footage for the final 82 minute film, so... more than 10:1...
One good word about dv (or two):
Cheap
One bad word about dv (or two):
Poor resolution (especially when projected on big screen)
