INTERVIEW

How would you describe the aesthetics of your film?
The film deals with some dark subjects like drugs and prostitution, so I wanted it to be sort of rough around the edges, with minimal, naturalistic lighting and hand-held camerawork.

Why did you choose to shoot on a digital format (was it solely for financial reasons, or did aesthetics play a role)?
The most important reason is obviously financial. However, HDV provides a lot of freedom, both in terms of the lightweight camera and the ability to shoot lots of footage. The fact that it is cheap to shoot on HDV also means a great deal of artistic freedom.

Which format exactly did you choose (MiniDV, DVCAM, HDV, HD...), and why?
I worked with HDV. My previous film was shot in DV, and I'm amazed at the improvement in image quality in just two or three years.

What was special about shooting digital (e.g. compared to 35mm, was it your first time with dv or are you used to it ..)?
This is my first time filming in HDV, and I really like the image quality compared with DV. I'd like to keep on exploring the medium in my next film, for example, by using film lense adaptors.

What was your shoot-edit ratio?
---

One good word about HD (or two):
Crisp and clean

One bad word about HD (or two):
Can look a little "videoy"
