DVL-Digest 723 - Postings: Index Info on D-VHS? Mechanical Fixes using a TV as preview monitor Info on D-VHS? - Adam Wilt The other format I've heard just a little about is JVC's D-VHS....I've > been hearing rumours that Sony is getting together with JVC to get the > format going. D-VHS is a "bit bucket" format using VHS-form-factor tapes to record a raw digital bitstream (ATSC, DVB or the like) to tape. The input is an MPEG-2 bitstream from a digital set-top box, using 1394 (but *not* using DV data over 1394!), and the output is the same signal to be fed to an MPEG-2 decoder for display. Some D-VHS models have the DVB receiver built in, and in this country are being sold by DSS providers for use with their own-brand digital satellite broadcasts. It's the long-GOP MPEG-2 equivalent of a DV VTR with FireWire *only* -- no analog inputs or outputs, no codec built in, and no frame-accurate editing of the long-GOP bitstream, either. The D-VHS decks I've seen do have analog I/O -- but only for recording and playback of analog VHS or S-VHS tapes. Here's the official D-VHS Home Page: http://www.jvc-victor.co.jp/english/D-VHS/dvhs-e.html Cheers, Adam Wilt Mechanical Fixes - Adam Wilt >It would be nice if we could use mechanical fixes to remedy bad drivers, > but it hasn't generally been our experience. A friend used to keep a 16-pound sledgehammer leaning up against the wall in his linear editing suite. He called it the "Sony Adjusting Tool" and claimed that the VTRs ran better when the "Tool" was prominently displayed. He felt that the firmware in the machines was intelligent enough to recognize a material threat, and thus was encouraged to avoid misbehaving. using a TV as preview monitor - Adam Wilt > I have a Matrox Digisuite LX system... It's connectors are single RCA video in, > single RCA audio in, mini-RCA audio jack out, and a cable TV input. Get a BNC/RCA adaptor (about 1-), and connect the composite video out from the LX to the video in connector on the TV. You may find the audio coming from the XLR connectors to be too "hot", and hear distortion through the TV. In this case, tweak the line output level in the DigiSuite control panel ("DigiSuite LX" > "Audio Out") down by 14 dB.
