avid free dv - "no desktop video resource" plus getting started

Hi. I know nothing of computers and am trying to get started setting up avid free dv on my Mac OSX version 10.4.10 with 2 GB memory.
I can't get my stuff digitized and start editing, although I think I'm following the AVID tutorial.
At first, the clips I digitized had the video frozen with audio running, so I deleted those and started over. Now I get a pop up that reads: "no desk top video resource."
How do I get help to walk me through it. Is there a tutorial for computer idiots or a forum for TOTAL beginners or can someone help me?
Maybe I don't have the right basic set up?
Do I maybe need to put my material on a separate "Festplatte" - how does that work? What kind of festplatte is necessary?
