Klingt vieles plausibel. We had a chat with the Sony rep this weekend and got some interesting nuggets. (Please keep in mind this is a sales rep. He's not told everything behind the scenes.)
1. We asked them why they kept the photo body-style form factor for the FX5. They said there were two reasons:
a. It makes it cheaper to manufacture.
b. This is the big one. Sony doesn't view the FX6 as a major success. When it first came out they sold a lot of them, but what happened was they saw a lot being returned and a hell of a lot on the used market with super low hours.
Sony believes this is because people thought they wanted the bigger camera, but when they got it they didn't want to learn the new exposure tools and missed IBIS, etc. With the smaller camera market being the biggest, they want to push towards those users more than anyone else.
(IMO, Sony learned the wrong lesson here. Give the FX6 more exposure tools and make lenses with image stabilization like Canon.)
2. We asked if the FX3/FX30 will be getting a replacement anytime soon. He said likely not in the next two years.
I mentioned that the ZV-E1 has better IBIS and autofocus, so maybe they could at least do a paid upgrade for it if they want to extend its life. Maybe add false color.
He said it was a smart idea, but it's not in Sony's DNA to do it. He also said FX30 users should look at the FX2 as their upgrade path, as it's more of an amazing Super 35 camera with a full-frame mode than a full-frame camera.
3. I asked why there isn't a stills mode. He said he doesn't know, and that the backlash has been so strong that they're going to add a frame grab mode of some sort in an update next year, but he knows nothing else about it.
In Sony's mind, the FX5 is meant to be a B-cam to the Burano, nothing else. We pushed back and said it can't even do Super 35 4K and doesn't match most of the resolutions. He said that's fair and will pass on the feedback for future firmware updates.
4. We asked if they could ever do anamorphic IBIS like Lumix. He said no, they can't because their sensor mount is too small and they don't have the room.
Sony was one of the first mirrorless full-frame camera manufacturers, and everyone that came after improved upon the design, which allows other companies to do more with their IBIS.
5. We asked them if we could get autofocus with anamorphic desqueeze. He said no, there are no plans to add it, including for Blazar and Sirui lenses.
6. We asked them why the FX5 can't do open gate 50/60 fps in H.265. They said it's a licensing issue, not a hardware issue, so this might change over time if Sony can work out a licensing deal or develop a new codec like Canon did.
7. He admitted Sony is kind of regretting not using CFexpress Type B cards in their cameras, as they now feel it's limiting them a little in terms of codecs. So my assumption is we may see this change in the future.
8. I asked him why they didn't change the top handle. He said it's mostly a cost thing, but they have added reinforcement to try and make it a lot stronger than the previous one.
He also said the handle won't ever work on the FX3, and the old handle won't work on the FX5.
9. I got to play with the FX5. It feels good, but the thumbstick is still in the wrong place, making menu navigation awkward. The bigger screen also doesn't feel bigger because of how the image is windowed, with your settings all around it.
10. He personally thinks open gate is stupid and overrated. He thinks Sony only put it in the camera to get people to stop complaining about it.
11. They experimented with the FX5 to see if they should lock the IBIS in place with a new mechanism so it would work better as a crash camera. Apparently this was heavily tested on Formula 1, but it didn't work well enough, so they opted to let owners choose to remove the IBIS completely instead.
12. He said the color science improvements on the camera are mostly due to the new AI chip allowing them to process more color information. Because of that, we shouldn't expect these improvements to come to older cameras.
13. we asked him about all the rumors about the camera having a global shutter.. he said it did at one stage. the issue they ran into was power consumption it would just drain batteries too fast and he thinks this will be sonys future once they figure out a solve.
14. according to him, sony still don't know why people dislike the fx2. which we found very funny.
their may have been more,, but it was a long convo if i remember anything else ill update the post.
